Dismissing a Michigan Traffic Ticket

If you're eligible to take a basic driver improvement course to dismiss a traffic ticket, the Michigan SOS will mail you a notification letter.
Generally, you'll be eligible to dismiss your traffic ticket if:
  • You have a valid, non-commercial driver's license.
  • You have 2 points or less on your driving record.
  • Your ticket is for a non-criminal offense.
  • Your citation is for an eligible offense and for 3 points or less, such as:
    • Speeding.
    • Running a stop sign or traffic light.
    • Following too closely.
For a complete list of eligible violations, please visit the Michigan Secretary of State website.
If you decide to take a defensive driving course to dismiss your ticket, you'll need to complete the course within 60 days.
After you successfully pass the driver improvement program, your course provider will notify the Michigan SOS.
If you are not eligible to take defensive driving, points will be added to your driving record and your car insurance rates may increase. Too many driving record points can lead to a driver's license suspension.
